Do Skin Boosters Help Acne-Prone Skin?
If you have acne-prone skin and are exploring ways to improve skin texture, reduce redness, or recover from past breakouts, you may have come across the term "skin boosters." But do they actually work for acne-prone skin, or can they make things worse?
Contain low concentrations of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule in the skin known for its hydrating properties
May include additional bioactive ingredients such as peptides, amino acids, antioxidants, nucleotides, and vitamins, depending on the product
Are administered through microinjections directly into the dermis, targeting areas that need hydration, elasticity, and texture enhancement
The goal is not to change the shape of your face but to enhance the skin’s internal environment — think of it as an intensive “nutrient infusion” for your skin. Over time, skin boosters help repair the skin barrier, improve water retention, and stimulate collagen and elastin production, leading to firmer, smoother, and more radiant skin.
While skin boosters are not designed to treat acne itself, they can support the healing process and improve the overall condition of acne-prone skin in several important ways:
Many acne-prone patients struggle with imbalanced skin — oily yet dehydrated. This paradox is often worsened by acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, or chemical exfoliants, which can compromise the skin barrier and cause flaking, tightness, or inflammation.
Skin boosters deliver HA directly into the dermis, bypassing the epidermis and moisturizing the skin from within. Unlike heavy creams or occlusives, which can clog pores, this approach provides essential hydration without triggering breakouts. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient, heals faster, and better tolerates active acne medications.
One of the most frustrating after-effects of acne is textural scarring — from rough patches and enlarged pores to shallow rolling scars. Skin boosters gradually smooth the skin's surface by:
Stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin
Enhancing skin density and elasticity
Promoting tissue regeneration via microtrauma and biological activity of ingredients
The results are subtle but cumulative. After a series of treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart, many patients notice a reduction in the appearance of pitted scars, bumpy texture, and overall skin roughness.
Even after acne heals, it often leaves behind reminders — red marks (post-inflammatory erythema) or brown spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). These can linger for months or even years.
Certain skin boosters, particularly those containing DNA fragments (like Rejuran), polynucleotides, and antioxidants, can help accelerate skin repair and reduce residual redness and pigmentation. By improving microcirculation and calming chronic inflammation, boosters help the skin achieve a more even, uniform tone over time.
Because the active ingredients in skin boosters are injected beneath the surface of the skin rather than applied topically, they do not occlude pores or interfere with sebum regulation. High-quality boosters are sterile, biocompatible, and formulated to be as minimally reactive as possible.
This makes them a safer choice for acne-prone individuals who often need to avoid rich creams or occlusive treatments. When administered properly, skin boosters will not contribute to new breakouts.
Kill acne-causing bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes
Directly reduce oil production or shrink sebaceous glands
Prevent clogged pores or regulate skin cell turnover
Replace medical treatments for active inflammatory or cystic acne
Correct deep boxcar, ice pick, or tethered acne scars without additional procedures (e.g. lasers, subcision, TCA CROSS)
In other words, skin boosters are not a cure for acne. Instead, they function as a complementary therapy — enhancing skin quality, aiding recovery, and preventing long-term damage.
Based on clinical experience at PLAN;S Clinic, skin boosters can be especially effective when used under the following conditions:
While generally safe, there are important precautions to consider if you have acne-prone skin:
Injecting into or near active pustules or cysts can introduce bacteria deeper into the skin, increasing the risk of post-procedural infection or worsening inflammation. Treatments should be done only when active acne is minimal or well-controlled.
After receiving a skin booster treatment, the skin may appear slightly swollen or bruised for 1–3 days. Patients should:
Avoid makeup, saunas, and intense workouts for 24–48 hours
Refrain from using exfoliants or retinoids for several days post-treatment
Follow post-care instructions to prevent irritation or flare-ups
Not all skin boosters are created equal. Low-quality formulations or poor injection techniques can cause nodules, uneven texture, or irritation. Choose a clinic with certified dermatologists or physicians trained in aesthetic injectables.
At PLAN;S Clinic, all procedures are performed under the supervision of Dr. Do Geon Gi, ensuring that each treatment is personalized and precisely delivered for optimal results and safety.
At PLAN;S Clinic in Seoul, we have treated thousands of acne-prone patients seeking skin rejuvenation and scar recovery. We often recommend two types of skin boosters for this group:
A hybrid formulation that combines polylactic acid (PLA) with non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid. It offers both immediate hydration and long-term collagen stimulation. Excellent for:
Mild atrophic acne scars
Dull, tired skin needing revitalization
Smoothing uneven skin tone over multiple sessions
Formulated with polynucleotides (PN), derived from salmon DNA, Rejuran is renowned for its regenerative effects. It promotes cell repair, reduces inflammation, and enhances skin barrier function. Best for:
Sensitive or inflamed skin
Post-inflammatory erythema
Enhancing recovery between more intensive treatments
We often combine skin boosters with microneedling RF, Pico lasers, or light chemical peels depending on the severity of scarring and the patient’s skin condition. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s skin type, history, and goals.
If you’re dealing with persistent marks, mild scarring, or want to improve skin tone and resilience, skin boosters may be the right next step.
